Twitter Blacklist?
If this site becomes used enough, the database created here could potentially function as a sort of Twitter
blacklist that could be integrated into apps and Twitter tools to make everyone's Twitter experience better.
Participation is what will make this possible. Douches that get nuked by more Twitter users than others, whether they are intentionally spammy or just oblivious to Twitter Netiquette, would have a higher Spam score than people who have only been nuked once or twice. Effectively, this is the same way RBL blacklists work, so it makes sense here too.
This is similar to how Twitter does it too, I'm sure. When a spammer is reported to @spam enough times, the account gets evaluated (or automatically suspended - not sure what their system is) but this would help users regain control over their followers faster and potentially allow desktop/mobile clients to have a spam threshold option that determine if you'll even have to bother seeing the follow, or if some automated action is performed if their DN Score is at a certain level.
About DoucheNuker.Com
This little project started as a companion-site to the wildly successful and wholly unprofitable SocialMediaDouchebag.Net. Within about 24 hours of going live, SocialMediaDouchebag.Net, it was being mentioned on sites like ReadWriteWeb and Ad Age. It clearly struck a nerve.
The fun part about having SocialMediaDouchebag.Net is that it gave me a site to send to the spammy SMDs before blocking them, to hopefully make a point, but to defintely make fun of them as a parting gift. Then it occurred to me that it would be great to automate this process so that I didn't have to find the tinyurl address, copy+paste it into a DM, and then click again to block them. Wouldn't it be neat if there was a 1-click (or as close to 1-click as possible) way to bid these asshats farewell?
And DoucheNuker.Com was born. It's still very much a work in progress - and your participation will help me kick the tires while I work on adding new options and features.
On the Horizon
So far, this is what we've got planned:
- Include porn bots, retweet bots, etc in DM+block options
- Scrub option to scrub your current follower list of anyone with a high probability of being a douche.
- Option to unblock previously blocked users from this site
- Leaderboard of most recent and most reported douches
- Improved UI
- Douchenuker bookmarklet to 1-click right from the offending users' profile page - DONE
- API that will return a douche-score based on a series of criteria. This API/scoring system will be available for desktop clients and command line scripts
This project is still pretty young, though - launched June 22, 2009, so I'm still working on figuring out what will best suit your needs -- and mine.
